TEN IDEAS TO MAKE YOU A BETTER GUITAR PLAYER
NOVA Music Center, 12704 Chapel Rd
Clifton, VA 20124
703-830-7141
workshop time--
Thur, Jan 19, 7:00 PM
If you play guitar, and find yourself stuck at one skill level, wondering why other people seem to improve while you stay
in one place, this workshop is for you.
Karl Straub will show you strategies and techniques to start improving your guitar playing right away, and
keep you getting better from now on. Straub's teaching method begins with an overview of the different areas a guitarist
needs to focus in order to improve, and continues with tips on finding which areas need work, and what to do about it.
It's a systematic method that will work for players at any level. Whether you're an advanced player trying to build chops, or a beginner struggling to play something that sounds like music, this workshop is for you.

KARL STRAUB ALBUM RELEASE UPDATE
Hi all,
For the first time in a long time, I have news of upcoming releases. The unfinished Graverobbers album "Harlem Hayride" is nearing completion. I don't know what this means in terms of time, but I can tell you that Peter Fox and I have been working on overdubs and mixing the last few months, and it's pretty close to done.
Once it's done, I'll make it available in some form-- not sure yet whether I'll put it on CD. That will depend on capital available-- perhaps I'll try one of those online fundraising things. I'll also be investigating putting the recordings on iTunes, etc.
This album is the last Graverobbers album, and features an eclectic mix of different genres, including rock and roll, country, jazz, and folk. It has what I think would have been the greatest Graverobbers single if we had released it as a single, a few remakes of earlier Graverobbers songs, some Bakersfield style country, a jazz ballad written by me that an elderly piano player told me sounded like Bix Beiderbecke's piano instrumentals, Martin Lynds with brushes (always a treat!), a few stolen guitar licks from James Burton, Johnny Thunders, Chet Atkins and Django Reinhardt, cowboy falsetto on the old standard "Carolina Moon," "Drunkard's Special," a song from the Harry Smith collection, a lot of great soulful harmony singing from Lee Wilhoit, Jimmy Gray on standup bass, a remake of "Sugar Rum Cherries" with Beach Boys-esque harmonies by once and future Graverobbers me, Lee, and the legendary D. Kevin Pera, a pinch of glam rock guitar, and three Thelonious Monk pieces played in country and folk styles.
It sort of sums up all the music we were trying to do in the Graverobbers-- including "some kind of weird Texas thing," as one disgruntled fan put it. I will always feel bad for inadvertently disgruntling that young woman, whose charm was exceeded only by her coquettishness. (I guess she's probably not young anymore, though. It's been a while.)
CrowTown, my new rock and roll band, is working on an album. That project is taking a while, and I don't expect final versions of it any time soon, but we are thinking about releasing some tracks that are close to finished to get our sound out there and generate interest in the band. It's the first time I've been in a rock and roll band for many years, so if you're one of the people who wistfully laments that I don't still write and play catchy pop songs, you're in luck.
This band is more or less all rock and roll music. The band is Antoine Sanfuentes on drums, and Pat and Jim Cavanaugh on guitar and bass. Mostly it's songs by me, most new for this project, with a few numbers written by Pat and buffed to a warm glow by me.
And I have just received electronic communication ("e-mail") from my colleague Eric Brace that we are about to put the Hangtown Dancehall album on front burner status, which is a change from middle burner, where it has recently resided. I'm not sure what this means, but it must be good. Most of that music has been recorded, but I've been taking forever to write the Overture. It promises to be a darn good Overture, though, when all is said and done.

KARL STRAUB HAS FINALLY WRITTEN A BUNCH OF NEW ROCK AND ROLL SONGS, TO BE PERFORMED BY NEW BAND CROWTOWN FRIDAY DEC. 2, 2011
Karl Straub's new band, CrowTown, is the first time Karl has been in a rock and roll band for a long time. (The Combo occasionally plays rock and roll, of course, but it's not exactly a rock band.) Karl's written a lot of new songs for this group, which is
Karl Straub, songs, guitar, and vocals
Antoine Sanfuentes, drums
Jimmy Cavanaugh, bass
Pat Cavanaugh, guitar and songs
Antoine played drums for the Linemen for years, and Pat and Jim are bass and guitar for Jumpin' Jupiter.
this performance is a sneak preview-- we are the live entertainment at a fundraiser for a documentary about a female rock photographer who covered the Pacific Northwest rock scene in the sixties. Overshadowed in recent years by the Seattle grunge scene, the rock scene back then was pretty damn influential, including luminaries the Ventures, the Sonics, the Kingsmen, and the Ventures. Jimi Hendrix also came from there, although he didn't become famous until he went to England.
flier is above, but here's a little info.
EVENT BEGINS AT 8
CROWTOWN FIRST SET AT 9
after that it gets fuzzier-- some excerpts from the film in progress will be shown, and CrowTown will play another set after that.
address is 8517 beech tree rd
bethesda 20817
if you're interested in going, you need to RSVP heraimistrue@karenjwhitehead.com

KARL STRAUB LIVE FRIDAY JUNE 24, HARRISONBURG, VA
If you live in or around Harrisonburg, Va, or are in the mood for a road trip, Straub will be appearing from 7 to 9 with the stripped-down Combo outside in a family-friendly atmosphere. Musicians appearing with Straub are Jerry Del Rosso on bass and Ariel Francis on keyboards. Straub is eschewing live dates this summer due to a huge amount of recording activity (five different albums are in the works at presstime), so this may be the only live Straub summer opportunity this year. Unless someone makes him an offer he can't refuse.

TWO STRAUB GIGS IN ONE WEEK. SAINTS PRESERVE US!
hi all,
two straubinical gigs in one week-- dramatically different venues, music, and alcohol.
MONDAY, MARCH 21
KARL STRAUB solo (8 PM-- DON'T BE LATE!) opens for Danny Barnes (Bad Livers) www.dannybarnes.com
at IOTA
iotaclubandcafe.com/
some of you have probably known of this guy Danny already for a long time--
until today, I knew him only by reputation, but I'm sitting here this a.m., digging the music on his site. aside from being a good songwriter in a country-rock vein, he's also blending harder rock with old-timey banjo. (Unlike a lot of well-meaning artists in the
"alt-country" or "country with punk roots" ghetto, Danny Barnes can really play and write.)
plus, he's a fellow traveller in the "avant-garde" landscape. one of his many albums is called
"Barnyard Electronics," (best album title I've heard in a while) and you can bet I'm going to try to con him into giving me
a promo copy of that one. (although I'm willing to pay cash if need be.)
To keep up with this illustrious man, I'll be bringing out my loop gizmos and various fuzztones and slapback for this show, so you're in for an evening of good songwriting, picking, and just enough weirdness
to keep you awake.
LATER THAT SAME WEEK-
Straub brings out the A-list Combo (special guest Kevin Cordt on trumpet!)
for a bunch of jazz sets.
the event: Of Wine and Words
Friday, March 25, 2011, at the Boeing Building, which is located at 1200 Wilson Blvd. in lovely downtown Rosslyn.
7 to 9:30.
(the Combo will play jazz off and on during that time, including a few new jazz pieces written by Karl.)
charity fundraiser for The Reading Connection,
a great program that raises money to buy books for kids.
If there's anything more important than music, it's reading.

STRAUB GIG TONIGHT IS AT NINE O'CLOCK! SATURDAY, NOV. 27, JV'S, WITH JUMPIN' JUPITER
STRAUB STARTS PLAYING AT NINE O'CLOCK!
(EARLIER POST FAILED TO MENTION THIS IMPORTANT DETAIL)
Here's another gig with Karl Straub opening for Jumpin' Jupiter. It's Saturday, Nov. 27 at JV's, part of the JV's ongoing anniversary celebration.
This gig is special for another reason. Normally at JV's I play with the Jumpin' Jupiter rhythm section. That's happening this time too, but for a few songs we'll switch it up with guest drummer Antoine Sanfuentes, and Pat Cavanaugh will join us as well. This will be a low-key foreshadowing of the band the four of us are putting together-- Pat and Jimmy Cavanaugh, plus me and Antoine. Although, I have to admit, holidays have distracted me and I never really confirmed this with Jay, or the other principals, so maybe it won't actually happen.
The uncertainty should add a spicy layer of tension to the gig, though, which you won't want to miss. Come and experience the nail-biting, clock-ticking, pulse-pounding suspense, along with the usual beers, booths and barstools that constitute the familiar backdrop for these gigs. FLAME ON!
